A Local-First Buffer Alternative

Updated 9 October 2026

Buffer is a genuinely good product. It’s clean, it’s reliable, and for a lot of teams and creators the cloud model is exactly right. This isn’t a teardown — it’s for the specific person Buffer isn’t aimed at: the founder or freelancer who’d rather own their tool, keep their data on their own machine, and not pay a subscription forever.

If that’s you, Auto·Cue is a different shape. Here’s the honest comparison.

The core difference

Auto·Cue Buffer
Where it runs Your own machine (desktop app) The cloud (web app)
Where your data lives On your device, in the OS keychain On Buffer’s servers
Pricing One-time purchase, or optional monthly Subscription
Scheduled sending While your machine is on Always-on, from the cloud
Niche networks Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads built in Varies; added later or not at all
AI suggestions Run locally on your machine Cloud-based
Built for One person, their own accounts Individuals and teams

Where Auto·Cue fits better

  • You want to own it, not rent it. A one-time purchase instead of a bill that never stops.
  • You care where your data lives. Your posts, your drafts and your access tokens stay on your machine. Nothing is uploaded to a scheduling company.
  • You’re on the newer networks. Bluesky and Mastodon are first-class here, not afterthoughts — and a lot of the build-in-public crowd has moved there.
  • You’d rather the AI stay private. Auto·Cue’s post suggestions run locally via your own models, so your content isn’t sent to a third-party AI service.

Where Buffer is the better choice

Being honest about this is the whole point:

  • Your posts need to go out when your computer is off. Buffer’s cloud publishes regardless of whether you’re online. Auto·Cue needs your machine on.
  • You work in a team. Buffer has collaboration, roles and approval flows. Auto·Cue is deliberately single-operator.
  • You need Pinterest, TikTok or YouTube. Auto·Cue doesn’t cover those yet; Buffer does.
  • You want a long track record and polished analytics. Buffer has years of maturity behind it.

Who Auto·Cue is for

Auto·Cue is for the solo founder, indie hacker or freelancer who’d rather be building than feeding five feeds — and who’d rather their social tool be something they own and control than another subscription holding their data. If that’s the trade you want, it’s worth a look. If you need always-on cloud scheduling or a team workflow, Buffer is the better fit, and that’s fine.

Frequently asked questions

Is Auto·Cue free?
The core app is a one-time purchase (currently $150), with an optional monthly plan if you want managed search included. There's no per-seat subscription for the app itself.
Will Auto·Cue post when my computer is off?
No — because it runs on your machine, scheduled posts go out while your machine is on and online. That's the trade for keeping your data local. If you need always-on cloud sending, a cloud tool like Buffer fits better.
Can I import my Buffer queue into Auto·Cue?
Not currently — there's no Buffer import. You connect your accounts and build your queue fresh.
Which platforms does Auto·Cue support?
Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, LinkedIn (profiles and Company Pages), Facebook Pages and Instagram. It doesn't cover Pinterest, TikTok or YouTube today.
Does Auto·Cue have team features?
No. It's built for one person running their own accounts, not shared team workflows or approvals.
